About Apricot Tree Academy

Built by a parent who was told dyslexia wasn't real — for parents who refuse to wait.

Empowering Learners with Dyslexia & Others Who Struggle with Reading

We are passionate about creating curriculum and tools to help struggling readers. We began by creating the Intervention Branch using evidence-based, explicit reading instruction and multisensory activities. Our vision is to create classes and instructional materials to empower all learners — and share the joy of learning.

What Makes Us Special?

We create curriculum using the Orton-Gillingham method and other Science of Reading–based approaches that can be used at home or in tutoring sessions. These multisensory activities are engaging for learners and easy for parents to teach.

What is Orton-Gillingham?

Orton-Gillingham is a structured, multisensory approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling, developed in the early 20th century by Samuel Torrey Orton and Anna Gillingham — primarily for individuals with dyslexia. It recognizes that learners with dyslexia have difficulty with phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and teaches these skills explicitly, systematically, and cumulatively.

What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading emphasizes evidence-based practices in reading instruction. It highlights the need for explicit, systematic, and structured teaching that addresses the foundational skills necessary for reading success. This research has had a significant impact on educational policy, curriculum, and teacher training — supporting all learners, including those with reading difficulties or dyslexia.

What are Multi-Sensory Activities?

Multisensory activities engage several senses — sight, hearing, touch, and movement — at the same time to strengthen learning and memory. By activating different pathways in the brain and reinforcing learning through multiple channels, they support diverse learning styles and deepen understanding and retention.

Our Educational Philosophy

Everything we build rests on structured literacy and the Orton-Gillingham approach — the explicit, systematic, multisensory instruction backed by the Science of Reading. Our job is to translate that research into clear, doable steps any parent can follow at the kitchen table.

My experiences have taught me that dyslexic children are brilliant. Their brains may work differently than many others, but they are amazingly gifted.

Sandra Dallon graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, then taught elementary school for six years. While teaching, she earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Antioch University. After leaving the classroom to raise her children, she returned to school for a certificate from the Dyslexia Training Institute so she could help children with dyslexia learn to read. Sandra has tutored children in reading for over ten years and has long wanted to build a reading curriculum parents can use at home. She lives in Texas and enjoys playing board games with her husband and four children.
